Sam Campbell interviewing fellow development scheme attendee Tom Johns

What have you learned about yourself so far?

Since the start of the course, I have learnt many things about myself including different ways of learning, how I learn, my strengths and weaknesses, and that I am more confident than I think I am. Prior to the course I thought I learnt best by writing notes down, however this was quickly proven to be wrong as Alan tested us with the 100 points of success. When I reflect on situations I have been in before the course and also while on the course, I have learnt that I learn best by making sure I understand what I’m being showed/told and then actually doing it (putting it into practice). In this process I have learnt that making mistakes is okay as it is one way of learning.

How will you implement what you have learned from the course to your job/your day-to-day life?

I am going to start getting out of my comfort zone more often. Prior to the course I did not enjoy being out of my comfort zone and avoided it at all costs, however I have learnt to become comfortable being uncomfortable and being confident to question things, even if I think they are silly questions or fear of being wrong. I am going to apply this to my job and day-to-day life as it will continue to develop me as a working professional and as a person. Further to this I am looking forward to applying the skills and knowledge I have gained from this course to get the best out of myself and my colleagues.

What topics have you enjoyed/got the most out of from the course?

I really enjoyed the visit to a shipping port, where we were showed around the ship and then learnt about the company, the routes we use and the relationship they have with Maxi. I also found the session with the Maxi driver George really interesting. This was insightful for me to listen to George and his challenges of being a driver and dealing his day-to-day job that we may not always consider when we are in the office telling him what to do.
I also enjoyed brushing my skills up on the custom session with Tim and Tom. Seeing the customs process in a more detailed way and learning more in depth about the terminology and challenges we face when dealing with customs was beneficial to me.

What’s your proudest achievement so far on the course?

I am proud of how far I have come in the short amount of time in terms of my self-confidence. Coming on to the course, I felt my self confidence was a weakness of mine however as the course has gone on, I have begun to understand myself so much more and ultimately realised I am a lot more confident than I thought I was.
Also I am really proud of how much better I have got at presentations and presenting to a room of people. This is something I really struggled with at the start of the course in terms of controlling and showing my nerves. After a week of presentations, I am really proud that my charity presentation was actually chosen by the shipping company as the best one from the group.
